Types of apartments
The terminology used to describe various types and sizes of the apartments in Manhattan is quite diverse and specific. Some are universal and easy to understand, others are innovative and purely regional. In many cases, the same term can refer to two extremely different apartments. The following glossary is meant to aid you in your search, clarifying the terms currently used in the Manhattan apartment rentals.
Studios
Studio represents a one-room apartment with separate bath. In some cases studios in NYC include separate kitchen, bud usually it is not separated with the room. Size of the studios may vary. This type of apartment is very popular not only with artists dwelling in Manhattan, but also with singles and a low income small families.
Alcove Studio
Alcove studio is the same studio but with additional space for dining, which sometimes is very important room to have and/or sleeping area in some cases. In NYC the structures of these apartments are often configured in L shape. Sometimes alcove studios may have additional area separated with archway.
Convertible 2, 3, 4
Convertible indicates that apartment has an alcove off the living room or an extra space that could be converted into another bedroom. Integer indicates the number of rooms it can be converted to. Alcove might be converted into numbers of different rooms, the limit is only your imagination, often they are not converted at all and are used as a living room.
One-Bedrooms
One-bedroom apartment literally states that it has one bedroom which is separated from the living area. It also may include separated kitchen, sometimes even with additional space for dining. Size of these apartments varies. A very good deal for a single or spouses living in Manhattan.
2-Bedrooms
A 2-bedroom apartment includes two separate bedrooms plus an additional living room, often has a separate kitchen. In some cases apartments include additional dining area. Size of these apartments and bedrooms may vary widely. This type of apartment is good for share or for spouses having a child.
3-Bedrooms
3-bedroom apartment includes three separate bedrooms plus an additional living room, often has a separate kitchen. In some cases apartments include additional dining area. Size of these apartments and bedrooms may vary widely. A very good alternative for a medium size family renting an apartment in Manhattan.
4+-Bedrooms
4+-bedrooms include four or more separate bedrooms plus an additional living room, often has a separate kitchen. In some cases apartments include additional dining area. Size of these apartments and bedrooms may vary widely. Perfect for big families living in NYC, one of the bedrooms can be used as a maid’s room.
Loft
Loft apartments are usually with big, open space. This type of apartment is generally converted from a commercial building. Almost always have high ceilings and large windows. Mostly found in commercial neighborhoods. |
